Week 12

Week Twelve: Inquiry

What did you find most beneficial about the course?

In my opinion integration of social media and media, writing is the most beneficial in this subject. We always use social media nowadays but I have never though media writing and social media in this way. I learned the important tool social media that can be to deliver news straight to the masses, as well as add strength to a story with things like photos, videos or images.

 What was most challenging?

As I mentioned, Writing is not my strength. I have struggled a lot to write in a presentable way. Writing the story may be a pace of cake for others but it is the hardest work for me. Never the less I have learned so many thinks from this course.

Has the course changed the way you practice or think about media writing? How/why not?

This course has really changed the way I use to thinks about the social media and media writing.

To write a news article or story, there are so many thinks to take consideration to present the story. I never knew how news articles write or presented before took this course.

Week Twelve: Feedback from Assessment One

My assessment one was on average Mark, although I have submitted 15 minutes late.

Some Comments for me on the draft:

A good effort overall. A good blog that shows a reasonable level of engagement with the required activities.

Points for improvement:

  • These blogs were an assignment for University and needed to be written with this in mind where you can relate theory to course work.
  • At the beginning of the course I suggested to the class a couple of times about people who felt their English needed assistance should visit the Academic Learning Centre. The ALC would help you correct your English ie sentence structures, upper case letters for pronouns like ‘I’ etc.

Your strengths were:

  • You made a very good effort to engage with course content generally.
  • Your integration of sources generally was good.

I will check my writing again and try to avoid the mistake I have done in the writing. I will be more care full on my grammar.

Week 11

Woman stuck under the train at Eagle Junction Train Station, Brisbane.

Original news story link is here

Use of word repetition:

The new article writer has repeated the word “A WOMAN” in this article few times. Instead of using “A WOMAN” writer should use “THE WOMAN”.

Also, there is no information how she stuck under the train.
In news article first few paragraphs writer didn’t mention when the woman was taken to the hospital. It indicates the woman still in under the train.

Mental health guidelines
The reporter has handled the cause of the incident by coating police officer line “self-harm” nicely and according to the guidelines of “Mindframe”. The woman motivation of the injury has not in the report. Also, there are two links at the end of the report for mental support if anyone needed.

My modified article

Week 9

Crocodile Specialist Group Newsletter
VOLUME 35, No. 2
APRIL 2016 – JUNE 2016
Crocodile specialist group newsletter included a number of stories. The newsletter starts with subscription information and editorials. The editorial start with the sad news of one of the most well-known members of CSG (Crocodile Specialist Group) and the good news was in may 2016 352 participants attended from 43 countries in Skukuza , south Africa.
CSG one of more than 100 species specialist groups operating under the auspices of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest consortium of conservation organizations and agencies, the CSG works closely with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and other international intergovernmental bodies to promote crocodilian conservation and legal trade that does not threaten the survival of these important reptiles. (iucncsg.org, 2016)
The newsletters stories for the science base and it helps to protect the reptiles special for the crocodiles. The CSG team of experts advises governments and wildlife management agencies, evaluates the conservation needs of crocodilian populations, initiates research projects, conducts surveys of wild populations, provides technical information and training, initiates conservation programs, etc. All their work and science information for the donors. The CSG’s targets audience also the above organizations.
The science journalist there are a lot of interesting information such as, They analyzed available literature on the bushmeat trade in 5 countries in west and central Africa. They also examine temporal changes over a 40-year period. There are results confirm that mammals dominated the trade in all studied areas and time periods, in terms of
(i) Number of species,
(ii) Number of traded individuals, and
(iii) Overall biomass etc.
That information is really in details and important for the future of the reptiles.
As a graphic designer, the newsletter is boring and too plain for me. It looks like they made the layout in Microsoft word. Also, it’s seemed done by the usual worker, not the designer work. In my opinion, they could spend some of the money for the design and get better design not only for the looks for the newsletter also for the get better attention from the donors.

Week 7

Summarise the key points of this chapter 11 of Media Writing text (Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith).

Key point if chapter 11 of media writing

There are lot of key points such as

  • Try to get the audience attention using background sound.
  • Cover the essential story within the time limit.
  • Applied the inverted pyramid structures writing style.
  • A written script must be provided for the broadcast.
  • A broadcast copy must flow the rhythm of the story.
  • Broadcast writing must be written conversationally, like talking to a friend.
  • Careful of using words that are hard to pronounce and try to avoid words that end in S or TH because they have a hissing sound when on air.
  • Writing must be clear for the broadcast.
  • Use strong active words, subject-verb-subject sentences.
  • Use the active voice. Like (thinks are happening now)
  • Make the newscast interesting for the audiences.
  • Try to avoid the numbers or figures in the beginning because audiences won’t remember them so they will have to be repeated later.
  • Starting the sentence with the person or subject that did the action.

What are the key differences between writing for broadcast and print-based media?

There are lots of different in writing in journalism. Journalism began as a print media and remained as such until the invention of the radio and television in the 20th century.

Writing that provides information over radio, television and now, the Internet is known as broadcast journalism.

A broadcast writer must tell a story in short time. Most of the broadcast story need to finish within 30 seconds. The story must be tight and instructive.  Newspaper writer more detail in the story.

The television writer writes visually, showing rather than telling, where appropriate. Newspaper writer provides information using 5W and H method.

Broadcast writing must be written conversationally; like you are talking to a friend.  It is written for the ear, not for the eye (Whitaker, et al., 2012, p. 229).

Week 6 (Media Writing COMM-11007)

Practical A: Storify Article
I have rewritten the interview from week four for Storify. As advised I have to change the direct quotes in order to elaborate the story. This is my first story on Storify. I am not a good writer and I can make up the story like the authors. I tried to write, hopefully, is readable.

Event Planning
The event I am planning to attend is “Visual impact Sydney 2016”. It is a printing exhibition for the printing and the business, graphic designer, and student. From the event, I will live tweet and after attending the event I will publish a Storify article.

All the local printing and graphic industrial business related people will attend the event. This event will focus the future of the industrial invention for the printing business.

There are so many things, we can learn and watch from this event. As a digital Media student, we should know what is going on the industry and know technology and use of it.

The article will include the photo, video and the information about new technology. The different company will demonstrate their product and how is work. I will try to cover the most advanced technology.

If anyone interested they can register on below link

Week 5 (Media Writing COMM-11007)

Week 5 task, we need to open a Storify account and browse some other account. It easy to open an account is only need to provide a username and email address and set a password to log in the account.

//storify.com/sabcnewsonline/unbeatable-bolt-signs-off-with-triple-triple/embed[<a href=”//storify.com/sabcnewsonline/unbeatable-bolt-signs-off-with-triple-triple” target=”_blank”>View the story “Bolt signs off with triple-triple” on Storify</a>]

It is easy to find the story on the site. Most of the story is the link to twitter as well. The Rio Olympic is going on a lot of stories are from Olympic. My favorite story is “Bolt sign off with triple-triple”. Bolt got 9 gold medal in three Olympic.

Social Media Networking Site

The second task is to find a social media site and write a short review about the site. I have chosen the “Flicker”. “Flicker is an online photo repository, it’s now part of Yahoo, it is an incredibly popular site for sharing photos and creating galleries. It also acts as a neat resource for finding Creative Commons images for use on blogs and other sites.” David, (2010).

Red Fox

(Photo Credit: Nicole Watson, Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/129524245@N08/29059381736/in/explore-2016-08-19/)

“According to this Yahoo Flicker advertising pitch page, there are currently 51 million registered Flicker members.” Thomas, (2011). Although yahoo doesn’t disclose active accounts, but if I guess I’d speculate somewhere between 10-20 million and I could totally be wrong on that. Many people don’t have Flicker account but visit the page to find the stock pictures.
I have chosen this social media because I have a Flicker account and I love the site more than Instagram and twitter. On this site, I can browse the different photographer work and it inspires me to get out and take pictures. Also, I can share my pictures who are similar passionate like me.

Week 4 (Media Writing COMM-11007)

In this week task, I have interviewed my elder brother and his wife.  Both of them agreed to share information with me.

My brother (Mesbha) has two daughters, elder daughter is 11 years old and the younger one is 1.2 years old. Both of them said their kids are the most important of their life. By the blessing of Almighty, they full fill the family and will carry their legacy. Mesbha said, “I feel complete and happy when I see their happy face”.

My sister-in-law ( Afrose) has left the job to take care of the kids. She said, “ I am willing to do anything to make them happy and it is the best time when I am with them”. Because of that, she leaves her job.

I asked “why” the kids are most important. From both of them, the answer was “you will understand when you will have kids”.  There are no words to describe the feeling when I see the happy.

Mesbha and  Afrose said, “now there kids happiness become their happiness”.  The end of the day, every thinks I am doing  only for my kids bright future, Afrose Said.

I had a hard time to write this task. I never interviewed any person before, also it is impossible for me to describe their feeling in the word how they feel  about kids and why they are so important. I don’t have the experience or capability to convey the story should be present.

Week 3 (Media Writing COMM-11007)

This week blog is about Plan news Stories and Prepare for Assignment 2. One of the event I have to cover a news story and post the tweet using event #Tag .

Two events I have chosen, they are the very different kind of event. One of them is call “Festival of the Winds 2016” and another one is “Visual impact Sydney 2016
